William Gourlay (@GourlayWill) wrote up a brief summary of an interesting documentary, Ashiq – The Last Troubadours, on the Sufi musicians of Xinjiang on his blog, The gypsy plays & the kurd dances. Unfortunately, the entire film isn’t available online and is only located in the University of California, Berkeley libraries. However, this beautiful clip above from the film reveals scenes from practices at mazar (mausoleums) on the outskirts of the desert. A beautiful (unrelated) book of photography, Living Shrines of Uyghur China, also documents mazar culture in Xinjiang.
